In the series of 3 blogs on Spinal Health, I will take you through six ways we use relaxation and gentle movement to do just this. Here are the first two areas to consider and a free guided relaxation to help take you there and deal with the physical aspects of natural pain relief. Get your copy of the relaxation now.

Pain management support

In Australia alone it is estimated that about 3.7 million Australians (16% of the population) have back problems. It is also estimated that 70–90% of people will suffer from lower back pain in some form at some point in their lives.

(Australian Bureau of Statistics 2014–15 National Health Survey)1

Often when a person is suffering long term with a back issue they may be given relaxation techniques as natural pain relief treatment for back pain. According to The Australian Pain Management Association “Psychology and psychological approaches to pain are an important and accepted part of the holistic pain management model. Research has shown that psychological approaches such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), mindfulness and hypnotherapy can be important components in improving pain management and indeed for warding off or being of benefit if anxiety or depression develop”.2

Seeing chronic pain as a mind-body experience and naturally applying the principles of yoga, such as breathing techniques, gentle movements and relaxation to address the pain can be a great natural remedy for chronic pain and can also help you reclaim your life.

An additional nutritional support for reducing inflammation is using turmeric (curcumin). Any time you’re making a home made curry it can be added in or have it as a herbal tea. There’s a great article, ‘Turmeric for Back Pain: Does Curcumin Help Sciatica & Herniated Discs‘ which will give you lots more information on the benefits of adding tumeric into your diet or as a nutritional supplement.

Reduction of inflammation

Inflammation in the body is a wonderful mechanism which protects our body when it is injured or harmed. It soothes our nervous system and promotes healing in the body. Inflammation removes damaged cells, irritants and toxins and once this has been done, it simply turns off again. The issue that we face with ongoing health issues is that this initial response does not switch off.

Chronic inflammation develops in the body and this creates even greater health problems particularly as medication used for inflammation can often have unpleasant  through to severe side effects.3

The good news is yoga and relaxation can help reduce inflammation naturally, calm the body’s nervous system down by relieving muscles aches, and improving circulation and respiration.

The body can then deal with stress in a much more functional way without causing any health problems. When you give yourself time to go through a few gentle stretches and a guided relaxation, or maybe listen to calming music in savasana (corpse pose) and truly let yourself come into a calm and relaxed space your autonomic nervous system gets to work and the inflammation starts to reduce. It goes without saying the more the you this the greater the benefits.

Are you ready to take charge your health and reclaim your life?

You can start to get the feeling perhaps that you have more control over your body’s health than you previously thought. Often it can be an ongoing journey but you can definitely take the driving seat in this journey. When we feel more in control we tend to feel less anxious. One of the greatest causes of stress and anxiety is when we feel we have no say and are disempowered.

Relaxation can help you take this control back.
