Spring Cleaning Detox Yoga

What is a detox?

A detox is a process where you give some attention to the foods and liquids you are putting into your body and basically being selective to only eat and drink highly nutritious foods. When we consider spring cleaning using detox yoga there are various nutritional tips and specific yoga postures we can use.

A detox can last for a day to much longer term and you definitely need to approach a detox armed with knowledge and if required a skilled practitioner to guide you. By doing this your body will start to get rid of toxins that you have stored in your body previously enabling your body to function better and ultimately leading to more energy, improved organ function and cleansing of your toxins and better health in general.

Why bother detoxing?

spring detoxEvery human body needs a break! If you don’t let your body rest and rejuvenate it may break at some point- telling you quietly or loudly depending on how it tries to grab your attention to say that it really does need a rest. Whether this is negative thoughts in the mind, a cold or a stronger flu or serious illness, all have the ability, to draw your attention to the fact that you may have to stop and take time for a few days, weeks or months to enter into a more self-loving space with a consistent self-care regime.

spring detoxSo Spring is on its way and nature is beginning to renewing itself. Now is a good time to be proactive about cleaning your mind, body and thought patterns. We see all the beautiful snowdrops slowly edging their way through the soil as it gently warms with the short bursts of sunlight we see. The lovely brightness of daffodils that are teasing at the moment, with the pregnant but often closed heads about to burst into colour – our bodies are the same.

What can I do to support myself during a detox?

Drink water to help your body release toxins and avoid alcohol as this simply adds toxicity to your body.

Attend a gentle exercise class to help your body release and clear toxins. It has been shown in many research studies that gentle exercise helps the body eliminate toxins and can help to flush them out. For example, in a Yoga Class, we include yoga postures (asana) which help to gently squeeze your internal organs which in turn helps you to release toxins. Within my yoga classes at the moment we are preparing the body to awaken alongside nature. Often at this time of year, we get lots of mucus-related illnesses and the beginnings of allergies may start. All these indicators may reflect the body trying to awaken into a lighter Spring Energy. Giving yourself an hour a week in a Yoga class will help your body to stay attuned to mother nature, therefore benefitting you in a really holistic way. Keeping in tune with Mother Nature herself is the best guide to living life fully.

Ease yourself gently out of your winter hibernation

Detoxing the body is a great way to help us out of our Winter Hibernation mode. It’s like taking your car in for a service, let it have a change of oil, give it some love and attention to make sure your car keeps going! Same principle… Have you ever thought that our bodies may work in the same way. Having a break from large amounts of heavy food for a day is a fantastic way to clean out your body. Freshly squeezed vegetable juices, raw foods, water and easily digestible foods just for 24 hours as a regular practice can make all the difference to your health. Of course, if you are under the supervision of a current health consultant or feel this may not be right for you, it is essential that you consult your doctor or natural health consultant before  trying it out.
