The Size of Successful Change: Quality v Quantity

How big does change have to be?

So when we are talking about making changes, what changes are we talking about, big , small, frequent or as a one-off? Do we just do something once and it changes? From my experience – no – change is little steps taken again and again.

autumn-1209944_1280The smallest of details can have a huge impact on our lives – a good example (and it is very small) is the change from tea to decaf tea. I’ve known for a while that caffeine really does not serve me and now when I do have the odd cup I see why – I get anxious and if it is a really good hit I become very ungrounded and high, losing sense of time almost. By changing to decaf I feel I have more connection to my day which in turn has affected how productive I am in my day which is really important for me running my on business and managing what can be an emotional rollercoaster with too much caffeine in my system.  So this was a small change but seriously noticeable effects.

HOWEVER….this change has taken me at least five years!! I have known for some time caffeine is not serving me yet I continued to drink it. Why does it take so long for me to implement changes I know are going to be really good for me? Do you find this is your experience?

Or it can be huge changes like changing jobs, relationships, locations. Of course these take a little longer sometimes but sometimes they can be quite fast too! Sometimes through choice and sometimes not. The key aspect then is how to assimilate (and keep assimilating) this change with the tools we have in our kit to make it as smooth a transition back to equilibrium as possible.

Making changes too improve your daily existence

What I’m interested in here is making changes for ourselves which improve the quality of our daily existence however been or small, whether in the physical or in your perspective and outlook on life and how long this can take. Logic would say we ‘should’ change because it is good for us and will give us a better experience in our daily lives. But we need to look at what else is being served within us that overrides the logic of making life-enhancing changes and never going back? This is the rich tapestry of being human, and for me, the joy and beauty of yoga and meditation, is to arrive on a path of self-awareness, so we can begin to understand what is driving us to be who we are.

Practising a yoga class can bring about profound change. When I say this I mean you can feel one way when you start and within 10 minutes of gentle movement you can completely transform how you feel, the space you are in and the way your whole day and experience then unfolds.
